SPIDERMAN: BRAND NEW DAY
A more realistic, emotionally mature turning point for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a big change for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, moving away from the cheerful high-school energy. The movie also slightly strays away from the multiverse themes that were in earlier films. Instead, the film presents a grittier tone, with feelings of isolation, consequence, and reluctant adulthood.
Tom Holland’s performance is noted for bringing both physical commitment and emotional restriction to an older, lonelier Peter Parker still living with the permanent consequences of No Way Home. The uncomfortable partnership between Peter and Frank Castle/The Punisher (played by Jon Bernthal) gives the film some of its dramatic and comedic tension. The shift toward a darker, New York atmosphere gives the film a welcome feeling, closer to classic superhero storytelling than CGI-heavy comic book spectacle.
