The Backrooms is a psychological horror story about people who accidentally enter an endless, maze-like dimension of empty rooms, yellow wallpaper, and buzzing fluorescent lights, where they must survive strange entities. It began as a brief 4chan post describing millions of square miles of empty office space. In the story, a fictional company called Async opens a dimensional gateway, creating tears in reality that trap unsuspecting people inside a disorienting maze that smells of old, damp carpet and hums with constant background noise.
Clark was an architect who became a struggling furniture store owner. He accidentally finds a strange doorway in his basement leading into the endless rooms while trying to reset the circuit breaker. Clark's therapist who enters the maze to find him, turning the search into a battle against personal trauma and distorted memories. Wanderers face hostile, uncanny entities and the psychological horror of being stuck forever in a loop of their own past regrets.
The film has a strong atmosphere and unsettling tone. Danny Vermette’s set designs turn the endless office mazes, distorted angles, and warped architecture into a tangible, dreamlike nightmare. The immersive sound design deepens the unease, using subtle electrical hums and sterile fluorescent buzzes to create a quiet dread more effective than loud jump scares.
The acting was good. However, there is nothing to write home about. The personal backstories kind of fall flat. The backstory of the main character is the basis of what makes the Backrooms a good metaphor.

Often imagined as empty office corridors where the oppressive hum of fluorescent lights heightens the unease. At first, these spaces may resemble ordinary vacant hallways and rooms, but they soon take on an “M.C. Escher-like” quality, with impossible layouts, misplaced doors, and miles of emptiness. What could be worse than being alone there? Realizing you are not.

Trivia
- The director, Kane Parsons, created a YouTube series about so called "backrooms". The studio A24 were impressed with the concept and asked him to write and direct the film. A24's youngest director, starting production after graduating high school. He was only 20 years old.
- Nearing the release of the movie, a guerilla marketing strategy was carried out, where ASYNC employees in hazmat suits placed replicas of the blue tape doorframe seen in the movie around urban locations. Some of these locations included popular sights associated with the Backrooms mythos, such as the Holiday Inn at London Heathrow Airport.
- Several filmmakers praised the film and its commercial success, most notably Steven Spielberg, who lauded the ingenuity of creating such highly lucrative, compelling films on micro-budgets.
Pirate Creature
- The pirate creature in Backrooms was played by Robert Bobroczkyi. Robert also played the "offspring" in Alien: Romulus. Robert Bobroczkyi is a Hungarian former basketball player and actor from Romania, renowned for his 7 ft 7 in (2.31 m) height, making him one of the tallest players in history
